week 8

In my opinion Chapter, 11 is one of the most compelling in the book along with Chapter 9. Chapter 9 painted the picture of just how dangerous these places are, and Chapter 11 was one of the most harrowing things I've ever read. In Chapter 11 Addario details how she and her fellow journalists were kidnapped by the Libyians. By the end of it, my hand was shaking it was mind-blowing to hear how brutal and sadistic these soldiers were. As she said before she worked in the middle east for years and was always treated with hospitality and kindness, but these soldiers had no respect for her or the other journalists. After being kidnapped they were moved multiple times once to a prison than to Tripoli, a VIP prison, and finally the Turkish embassy where they were released. Throughout this journey, they experienced beatings, groping, and psychological tortures. The quote that stayed with me the most is "The fact is that trauma and risk-taking hadn't become the job, especially as journalists become more of a target themselves." This resonated with me because of how something so terrible and foreign to you can just become a normal thing.

The photo that has stayed with me the most is one of the journalists before being released to Tunisia because they look equally relieved and still terrified by what they just went through. It just shows on their faces how haggard they are.

This chapter shows the darker side of photojournalism. A lot of people just see a photograph and are moved by it, but do not think about what that photographer went through to get that shot. They could have been almost killed, or kidnapped, or worse. It just shows a darker side of the world they live in.
